Year 1

Birmingham

This term in Year 1 we are learning about where we live, different artists that live near us and the different landmarks that are near us.

Reading

Children have been reading different decodable books in small groups.  Every week they have a new book and though out the week they read the book several times and answer questions about the book.

Your child will get a new book on a Monday and a Thursday.  Please read with your child at least 3 times a week for 10 minutes. Every time you read with your child record how they have read and if they have understood their book, you can do this in their reading record.  

Reminder:

Please make sure your child has their book bag with their reading book and reading record in school every day as they could be asked to get their book to read to an adult at any point in the day.

Writing

This half term we have been writing to inform.  We went on a walk around our local area looking at the different types of houses, shops and local amenities.  We discussed everything we saw and wrote a recount about our walk.  We tried to make sure that we used good vocabulary and time conjunctions to describe what we saw.

Art

In Art we have been learning about how to use a variety of drawing tools (pencil, wax, chalk, ink, pen, brushes charcoal), line making (thick, thin, wavy, and straight); and explored how to use different textures through experimenting with marks. We have also been learning how to draw landscapes as accurately as possible and using our knowledge of patterns in the natural and man-made world to create a piece of art. We also know the names of all the colours and how to mix colours to make new colours.  We have been studying a local artists work, David Hockney and comparing his work to the local artist John Evan's work of Gas Street Basin.

Science

In Science we have been learning about different Materials and we have looked at the properties of these materials so that we could create a boat that would make it from Derby to Birmingham without sinking.
