Independent Task

He shivered at the sight of the wooden building in front of him.  The God House had always made him nervous.  It looked like a dragon, its walls painted to resemble scales, its entrance a mouth with fangs carved into the curved doorposts, a pair of yellow eyes above.  And to complete the picture, leading up to the door was a red flagstone path like a fiery tongue.

1.What do you think jowls are in the sentence “He was bald and fat, the flesh of his jowls merging into his neck as if they had melted, the mountain of his body covered in a fine red tunic.
2.The author described ‘a line of enclosures made of wooden stakes lashed together –like animal pens, but for people instead.  Those packed into the pens were quiet, expressions of despair or blankness on their faces.’  How do you think the people in the pens were feeling?
3.List 4 things that were leaning against the wall in the smithy?
4.Why was Ormknown as the King of Kaupang?
5.Gunnar has got himself into a tricky situation, what do you predict he will do now? 

 

6.How would you sum up the events in this chapter?
7.Why was Ruricklaughing when Gunnar attacked the smithy?
8.Why does Rurickseem a bit different to the other characters?  Do you think that might be significant?
9.On page 76 and 77, the author has used ‘said’ several times.  Rewrite this section of the chapter using alternative words to show how the characters are feeling.
10.What do you suppose has happened to Hogniat the end of the chapter when he was attacked by Gunnar?
