HISTORY:

History

We are learning about Ancient Egyptian belief in the afterlife.

Read the following information and draw diagrams (pictures with labels) to help explain how bodies were prepared for the afterlife.

This video will also provide you with some information about the process.

 

  1. They started with the head. The brain was removed with a hook.
  2. The body was washed and the internal organs were taken out.
  3. The lungs, liver and stomach were placed in canopic jars.
  4. The body was filled with spices, sawdust and linen.
  5. The body was dried in a type of salt called natron.
  6. The body was bandaged with linen.
  7. Amulets (small objects that were supposed to give the owner powers or protection) and scrolls were placed inside the linen to protect the dead person.
  8. A funeral was held.
  9. Mummies were placed in a coffin painted with a face to resemble the person inside.
