Reading: Reading: Oliver Twist – Chapter 3 (Bug Club) LO: To identify the meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary. • Read before and after the word • Use the context • Identify the root word • Substitute the word SPELLINGS: nursing: read root word I know that 'nursing' is a verb. I know that a nurse is someone who cares and supports Individuals during their illness. Therefore, I know that 'nursing' is the practice of Caring/supporting someone who is unwell.
curious: read before and after the word I know that Mr Brownlow was feeling rather confused at this point in the story. He had just seen something very strange. Therefore, I know that 'curious' means 'strange' or 'unusual'
Hoisted: substitute the word I know that in this sentence, 'hoisted' is a verb. The words after 'hoisted' tell me that he was lifted up.
Uninterrupted: root word The root word is 'interrupted which means stop/cut/break the continuous process of something. The prefix 'un' means 'not' or the opposite. Therefore uninterrupted means not stopped/cut/broken. (in this case, uninterrupted rest).
Use the taught strategies to identify the meaning of the following words:
astonishment overwhelmed acutely gawping menacing

Lesson 4 11.45-12.30 |
Reading: Oliver Twist – Chapter 3 (Bug Club) • Fact retrieval • Inference • Prior knowledge /personal experiences
My example: Discuss why Oliver trusts Mr Brownlow? Oliver trusts Mr Brownslow because he took him in and looked after him in his time of need. When Oliver was wrongly accused of stealing, Mr Brownslow took pity on him and decided to help him. He took Oliver to his home and let him rest, making sure that he was fed and looked after well by his housekeeper. In the text it also says that Oliver completely trusted Mr Brownslow – he even opened up to him and told him his story. The fact that Oliver confided in Mr Brownslow tells me that he was comfortable around him and trusted him.
Your turn: 1. Who do you think the lady in the portrait could be?
2. Imagine you are Oliver, which character do you feel safest with?
