Teaching of Phonics

Phonics

From EYFS to Year Two, children take part in a phonics programme called Letters and Sounds. Each child is grouped by ability and they take part in a daily phonics session. Children learn 44 phonemes (sounds) along with the corresponding graphemes (letters/ letter groups) using simple picture prompts. They also learn to:

  • read words using sound blending
  • write the graphemes which represent the 44 phonemes
  • spell words through the use of segmenting
  • read stories containing the graphemes they have learned
  • develop comprehension by answering ‘Find It’ and ‘Prove It’ discussion questions.

For any further information or queries about how we teach phonics please contact the school using the form below.
