Swimming is a compulsory subject in the National Curriculum. It states that:
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2. In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- Swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
- Use a range of strokes effectively ( for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke)
- Perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
We take our children to the swimming pool at Castle Vale for weekly lessons. There are two qualified swimming coaches as well as the Class Teacher who teach our children to swim.
From September 2016, we will just be sending Year 5 swimming to ensure that children have focussed teaching for the whole year to reach the above expectations.
